A handcrafted America’s 250th Anniversary quilt – created and donated by local quilter Mary Boswell – is the featured item in the Lamoni Fire Department’s summer fundraising effort. The quilt, made entirely by hand and offered as a community supported fundraiser, has already helped generate nearly $1,000 in contributions, with additional support encouraged through early July.
Boswell, known locally for her detailed craftsmanship and traditional quilting techniques, created the piece as a tribute to the nation’s upcoming semi quincentennial. The quilt incorporates deep blues, rich reds, and soft neutrals in a classic patriotic pattern, reflecting both national heritage and the spirit of community service. Boswell said she wanted the piece to “celebrate the resilience of the country and celebrate our local residents who protect it every day,” a nod to Lamoni’s firefighters who inspired her donation.
“We’re grateful for Mary’s generosity and the time she invested in creating such a meaningful piece,” said Fire Chief Curt Shields. “Community support like this strengthens our department and helps us continue improving training and equipment for our volunteer firefighters.”
The quilt is being used as part of a ticket based fundraising drawing, with the selection scheduled to take place shortly after the Fourth of July. “The effort is structured strictly as a community fundraiser,” Mayor Douglas Foster said, “and the focus is on voluntary contributions to support the department.”
Funds raised will assist with essential needs, including updated safety gear and advanced training resources for Lamoni’s volunteer fire crew.
The quilt is available for public viewing at Lamoni’s Hy-Vee Pharmacy. “Community members are encouraged to stop by, appreciate the craftsmanship, learn how to participate in the fundraiser, and hopefully enter the drawing,” Shields said. Tickets can also be purchased at City Hall up to July 4th.
The Lamoni Fire Department is a volunteer based public safety organization serving the City of Lamoni and surrounding rural areas. The department is committed to protecting life and property through emergency response, fire prevention, and community education.
